Worker trapped in trench with broken pipe
A 59-year-old Board of Water Supply worker avoided serious injury Friday after he was caught in a trench that filled with water from a broken pipe.
The worker, who has been with the BWS for 33 years, was part of a crew dispatched to repair a 16-inch water main at North School Street near Kamehameha IV Road, according to a board spokeswoman.
At about 9:30 a.m. the crew reactivated the flow of water, causing the pipe to rupture. The worker was pulled from the trench by co-workers and was taken to a hospital.
The main was expected to be repaired Friday evening.
Isles prefer Liam, Olivia as baby names
Liam and Olivia both jumped seven spots from 2012 to become the most popular baby names in Hawaii in 2013, the Social Security Administration said Thursday.
Mason was the second most popular name for boys in Hawaii. Noah, the top name in the United States, was third, followed by Ethan and Logan.
Sophia, the most popular girl’s name in the nation, was second in Hawaii. Third was Ava, followed by Emma and Mia.
Kai was the most popular Hawaiian-language name for boys. It ranked 19th in the state. Malia, the most popular Hawaiian name for girls, ranked 21st.
Whale sanctuary panel looks for members
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary needs to fill two primary and four alternate seats on its advisory council.
The sanctuary said Thursday the two primary seats are for people representing the business and tourism sectors. The alternate seats are for people representing Native Hawaiian constituencies, Hawaii County, Honolulu County and commercial shipping.
Alternates attend meetings when primary members are not available and assume a seat if a primary member resigns.
The council offers recommendations on how to manage and protect the sanctuary. Applications are due June 30.
Reward offered for information on cat killings
LIHUE » The Kauai Humane Society and the Humane Society of the United States are offering a reward in response to reports of cat killings across the island.
The Garden Island reported Friday the $5,000 reward is for information leading to an arrest.
Kauai Community Cat Project Managing Director Robyn Botkin says they have received calls from people reporting late-night cat shootings.
However, Kauai police say they are not aware of any alleged crimes.
Kauai County to host forum on road project
Kauai County will hold an open house and public information meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to discuss a proposed road that would run from Hanamaulu to Puhi.
The meeting will be in the King Kaumualii Elementary School cafeteria, 4380 Hanamaulu Road.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. so the public can view displays of the project before the formal presentation, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Maui school celebrates anniversary
WAILUKU » Hawaii’s newest school is celebrating its first year.
Puu Kukui Elementary opened last year with more than 500 Central Maui students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
A celebration Friday included a dedication ceremony on the school’s central lawn.
According to the Department of Education, the campus features an energy-efficient and environmentally conscious design, including photovoltaic panels and windows optimized to take advantage of tradewinds.
