Fiery car crash on North Shore kills driver and closes highway
A single-vehicle crash on Paalaa Uka Pupukea Road on the North Shore left a man dead and prompted the closure of Kamehameha Highway in both directions Monday evening.
According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins, the vehicle was apparently traveling south when it struck a utility pole.
A witness checked on the driver but could not find a pulse.
The witness tried to extricate the pinned driver but had to retreat when the car caught on fire, Jenkins said.
The initial emergency call came at 6:28 p.m.
When firefighters arrived at 6:35 p.m., they found the car fully engulfed in flames, Jenkins said.
Firefighters brought the fire under control by 6:40 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle was burned beyond recognition and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions from J.P. Leong Highway to Kamananui Road while they investigated.
