Drunken driving checkpoints net arrests
Over the Memorial Day weekend, Honolulu police arrested 41 drivers for alleged drunken driving and four for alleged drug-impaired driving.
Police manning 37 checkpoints also issued 1,042 citations for various offenses, including driving without a license and without insurance, racing, excessive speeding and reckless driving. They also made an arrest for unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, an arrest on felony drug charges and another for a $50,000 felony warrant.
Police will continue with the checkpoints during this graduation season.
Maj. Kurt Kendro said Tuesday he hopes the checkpoints will act as a deterrent as well as send a strong message during this graduation season not to drink and drive.
"A lot of schools have Project Graduations, but it’s the parties after that" that have police concerned, he said.
From the Traffic Division and eight patrol districts, 169 officers conducted the DUI checkpoint project. They evaluated 225 drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
