Swimmer dies trying to rescue relative
A 26-year-old man died Saturday while attempting to help a family member in distress in waters off Laie Point.
Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel responding to a 1:41 p.m. emergency call arrived to find two women in the ocean at the base of a cliff holding the man, who was unconscious and without a pulse, according to HFD spokesman David Jenkins.
Firefighters and ocean safety personnel used a water craft to bring the man back to shore, where he was transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported that the man jumped off the cliff into the water in an attempt to help a family member who was having difficulty in the water. No one else was injured.
