Teens injured in Hana crash
Two teenagers survived when the vehicle they were riding in Sunday veered off Hana Highway and fell 80 feet down a ravine.
According to a Maui Fire Department report, the vehicle landed on its roof. The two occupants, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, were able to exit the vehicle on their own and were airlifted one at a time to a secured landing zone.
Both suffered head and neck injuries and were transported in stable condition by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center. The vehicle left the highway near mile marker 42.5 in Kipahulu around 9:55 a.m.
Coast Guard ends sea search
The Coast Guard has suspended the search for 30-year-old Peter Mahoe, who disappeared Thursday near Cape Kumukahi on Hawaii island.
Mahoe was last seen between noon and 2 p.m., climbing down a cliff face where he was picking opihi.
Personnel from the Coast Guard, Hawaii Fire Department and Hawaii Police Department conducted an intensive three-day search spanning some 1,414 square miles.
The Coast Guard suspended the search Sunday evening after failing to locate any sign of Mahoe.
"The decision to suspend our active search efforts is always difficult and was not made lightly, but one that had to be made at this time," said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, commanding officer of the Coast Guard’s Honolulu sector. "Our hearts ache at the loss of this honorable young veteran, and our thoughts are with his loving wife, mother and siblings that have shown how much he meant to them."
