Season-ticket sales for University of Hawaii football appear headed south, way south.
As of the end of May, UH said it had renewals for approximately 12,300 season tickets. That’s a 67 percent renewal rate from 2013 and a tumble of more than 15,000 from 2008, when 27,705 season tickets were sold in total as part of a "Backin’ McMackin" campaign coming off the Sugar Bowl season of 2007 and entering the head coaching debut of Greg McMackin.
Meanwhile, Rainbow Wahine volleyball season tickets for coach Dave Shoji’s milestone 40th season are running at about 3,200 and have been renewed at an 86 percent rate, officials said.
New season-ticket sales for both sports start next month and will continue on into August.

Season-ticket sales are a key pillar of UH finances, accounting for approximately 70 percent of football and volleyball ticket revenue in a single year.
To encourage season-ticket sales in the wake of a 1-11 season in 2013, athletic director Ben Jay said UH is offering holders of season tickets in other sports a 5 percent discount on those tickets if they also purchase football season tickets.
In addition, Jay said UH is planning a "special preseason event" on campus for football and women’s volleyball season-ticket customers. Football season-ticket holders will continue to be offered a discount on pay-per-view of UH road games, officials said.
"There are a number of things we’re looking at," Jay said. "As I told our staff, this is a year (dedicated to) valuing our season-ticket holders. That was the message we heard loud and wide last year from our loyal season-ticket base."
Last year UH sold 3,720 season tickets for Rainbow Wahine volleyball and officials are hopeful to surmount the 3,799 mark of 2008.
"Sales have been strong and we’re moving toward it," said Carl Clapp, UH associate athletic director.
