UH finishes 13th at sailing nationals
The University of Hawaii athletic department capped the 2013-14 sports year with a 13th place finish at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Gill Coed National Championship on Friday in St. Mary’s City, Md.
UH’s coed sailing team was the last program still in competition and posted its highest finish at the nationals since placing second in 2005. The Rainbows closed the two-day final round with 325 points.
UH was 11th after the first day of the finals on Thursday and closed the regatta with 153 points in the A Division and 172 points in the B Division after 15 races.
Yale captured the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy with 121 points.
UH’s 2014-15 event calendar begins Aug. 24 when the Rainbow Wahine soccer team plays host to Arizona State.
Tinman Triathlon entries being accepted
Entries for the 35th Tinman Triathlon are now being accepted.
The July 27 event begins off Queen’s Beach and finishes at Kapiolani Park. The race is comprised of a 750-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run.
Fees are $105 for individuals and $132 for three-person teams through June 10. Fees rise after that.
Mailed entries are due by July 15, online entries by July 19 at active.com and walk-in entries by July 20 at The Bike Shop (1149 South King Street).

U.S. rallies past Russia in FIVB play
The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with three players from Hawaii playing in the FIVB World League match, outlasted defending champion Russia 25-17, 27-25, 20-25, 25-27, 15-12 on Friday night in Long Beach, Calif.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha, USC) helped the U.S. remain undefeated in World League play at 3-0 during the 2 hour, 23 minute match inside the Walter Pyramid at Long Beach State. Erik Shoji (Punahou, Stanford) played the entire match at libero while older brother Kawika (‘Iolani, Stanford) played in two sets as a serving specialist.
Opposite Matt Anderson (Penn State) led all scorers with 31 kills, a block and two aces. Outside hitter Taylor Sander (BYU) added 18 kills, two blocks and two aces.
The U.S. was poised to end it in four when leading at 21-17. Russia rallied to take a 24-23 lead en route to evening the match.
In Set 5, the U.S. broke a 3-3 tie with a 3-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way. Russia dropped to 0-3.
The teams meet again Saturday (4 p.m. HST).
