Woman dies after jumping off sea cliff
A 22-year-old woman apparently drowned Sunday at the Spitting Cave area near Portlock.
Honolulu firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel were alerted at 2 p.m. and located the woman in the water.
The woman was brought to shore at Maunalua Bay, where she was pronounced dead by paramedics.
In April a 19-year-old man died at the same location after jumping into the ocean from a ledge and being carried out by a strong current.
Spitting Cave is a popular spot for cliff-jumping in the Portlock area of Hawaii Kai. When waves roll into the cave and hit the back wall, white water is "spit" back out of the mouth of the cave.
Dehydration ends race for canoe paddler
A Healani Canoe Club paddler participating in the annual Pa‘a Eono Hou canoe race apparently suffered from dehydration Sunday and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
The man was transferred from the canoe to a safety chase boat that brought him into Maunalua Bay near Hawaii Kai and to an ambulance.
Other crew members at Healani Canoe Club finished the race to the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.
The race involved six-person crews racing from Maui to Molokai, then, on the following day, paddling from Molokai to Oahu.
Kin, friends and Red Cross help fire victims
Most of the 22 people whose homes were damaged by a fire in Ewa have found temporary quarters with relatives and friends.
But a few who had no place to go were put up for a few days at a hotel, Red Cross volunteer Renie Bayne said.
Bayne said some were able to salvage some of their belongings. She said a Red Cross counselor will be available to assist victims.
The cause of the three-alarm fire, which did an estimated $750,000 damage to eight units and their contents, remained under investigation, Honolulu Fire Acting Capt. David Jenkins said Sunday. Jenkins said the fire started on the patio of a ground-floor unit.
No charges in fight that killed man
Police will not pursue manslaughter charges against a 20-year-old man who was involved in an altercation that resulted in the death of a 58-year-old man.
Daniel Moon died five days after what police are calling a "mutual physical altercation" with the man.
The fight occurred around 9:35 p.m. May 30 in Makiki.
Moon also hit a passenger in a car during the altercation and was uncooperative with investigators at the scene, police said.
Moon suffered head injuries in the fight and was transported in serious condition to an area hospital, where he died Wednesday.
Police opened a manslaughter investigation after Moon’s death. On Saturday the prosecutor’s office formally declined to pursue charges against the 20-year-old man.
