MIAMI » Hurricane Cristina has strengthened off Mexico’s Pacific coast but still poses no threat to land.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Cristina’s maximum sustained winds late Wednesday were 100 mph.

The hurricane was centered about 230 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and was moving northwest at about 6 mph, farther out to sea.

The center said some additional strengthening is possible during the next day or two and that swells generated by Cristina are affecting parts of Mexico’s southwestern coast. The swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
