Henry "Hank" Adaniya turned 60 Sunday. The Japanese consider 60 a yakudoshi year — unlucky — thus the trend of throwing a party as a way to contradict fate.
Not necessary in Adaniya’s case. His humble Kakaako shop, Hank’s Haute Dogs, has been named by Gayot.com as one of the Top 10 places to get a dog on a bun in all of America.
"I was really surprised — I didn’t even know they did hot dogs," he said of Gayot.
It’s an indication, he said, that "hot dogs are really becoming a thing. So many people are jumping into the gourmet hot dog thing."
Also in the Top 10: Lafayette Coney Island (Detroit), Hot Doug’s (Chicago), Gray’s Papaya (New York), Fritzi Dog (Los Angeles), Frank (Austin, Texas), Dogma Grill (Miami), Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace (Columbus, Ohio), Biker Jim’s Gourmet Dogs (Denver) and Ben’s Chili Bowl (Washington).
Gayot, an online authority on dining, travel and lifestyle, singled out Hank’s Lobster Dog, seared in butter and garnished with takuan (pickled daikon), as an "exotic choice." It also took note of the Fat Boy, a bacon-wrapped, deep-fried dog.
Adaniya said he has been working on combining the two into a deep-fried Lobster Fat Boy.
Is eating such a thing good for someone looking toward his next 60 years?
"Do it in moderation," Adaniya said.
