4 people trying to row to Hawaii rescued in Pacific
SAN FRANCISCO >> A Coast Guard helicopter rescued four people attempting to row from California to Hawaii.
The Coast Guard reported Saturday that the rowers were participating in the Great Pacific Race when they reported taking water on board their 24-foot boat. High seas prevented a chase boat from taking on the rowers and the Coast Guard was called to help.
The rowers were found about 75 miles west of San Luis Obispo, California at about 1 a.m. PDT Saturday. A rescue swimmer was lowered from a helicopter to the rowboat. Three rowers were hoisted in the helicopter before it returned to land for refueling. It returned to pick up the remaining rower and rescue swimmer who stayed with the boat.
The Coast Guard said no one needed medical attention.
