Scott Squier can finally stop working out on his own.
The former University of Hawaii pitcher signed with the Miami Marlins on Friday and will begin his professional career next week with the Batavia Muckdogs in the New York-Penn League.
Squier, who had a year of eligibility remaining at UH, was selected in the 16th round of the MLB draft this month and received a signing bonus of $80,000.
He will spend Saturday working out at the Marlins’ home park before flying to New York on Sunday to begin his big league career.
"I’m definitely excited to get back to playing and not just working out on my own," Squier said.
Squier was drafted as a high school senior in the 21st round by the Detroit Tigers but decided to attend UH.
In three years, the 6-foot-5 left-hander went 8-15 with a 3.47 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 207 innings.
As a junior, Squier made 13 starts and worked at least seven innings in nine of them.
He threw his only nine-inning complete game in his final outing at Les Murakami Stadium, allowing one run on seven hits with three walks and a career-high-tying nine strikeouts in a win over UC Riverside.
"I definitely loved it being out there for three years," Squier said. "I learned a lot, developed as a pitcher and matured and got better at my craft."
Squier was one of three Rainbows selected in the draft.
Right-hander Matt Cooper, who was taken with the very next pick after Squier by the Chicago White Sox, made his professional debut on Tuesday
Cooper allowed one hit and struck out two in one inning of relief for Great Falls in the Rookie Pioneer League.
