The Cardinals placed former University of Hawaii player Kolten Wong on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore shoulder Saturday night.

The second baseman hurt his shoulder while making a diving play on June 3, the Cardinals said in an article on their MLB.com website.

Shoulder soreness forced him out of a game two days later and Wong stayed home and rested for four more days during a road trip to Toronto.

Since returning, Wong was 2-for-26.

“I think they go hand in hand,” manager Mike Matheny said in the MLB.com article of Wong’s shoulder and struggles. “He’s really trying to grind though, but since that happened, you’ve been able to see that he hasn’t been able to get a good finish on the swing. We’re going to make the move.”

Wong could return to action as early as July 6 depending on the results of more tests and treatment.

Shane Robinson is being recalled from Triple-A Memphis for Sunday game.
