Kauai motorist unhurt after car strikes guardrail
A 27-year-old Kapaa, Kauai, man escaped injury Sunday when the car he was driving hit a guardrail on Kapaa Bypass Road and overturned.
According to Kauai police, the man was traveling north at about 5 a.m. when he fell asleep and drove off the roadway into the guardrail near the Kuhio Highway junction.
Both lanes of the bypass were closed for about 40 minutes while the vehicle was removed.
No injuries caused by fire in Maui house
Maui firefighters extinguished a fire at a single-family dwelling in Haiku on Sunday.
The fire, reported at 1:29 p.m., engulfed the kitchen and surrounding areas.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 2:05 p.m. and had it completely extinguished by 3:24 p.m.
One person was home at the time of the fire but was able to escape without harm.
The cause of the fire was an electrical accident, officials said. Damage was estimated at $250,000.
Swimmer hurts spine in ocean off Na Pali Coast
A 35-year-old visitor from Colorado was seriously injured Saturday evening off the Na Pali Coast.
The woman reportedly injured her spine while swimming in the shorebreak at Honopu Beach at about 5:45 p.m.
A tour boat operator notified the Coast Guard, which in turn notified Kauai police.
Fire rescue personnel airlifted the woman to Princeville Airport and released her to the care of paramedics, who then transported her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
