Maui council overrides mayor’s 8 line-item vetoes

WAILUKU >> The Maui County Council is overriding the mayor’s eight line-item vetoes to the budget.

The Maui News reports the overrides unanimously approved Monday restores several capital improvement projects but will reduce landfill and refuse services.

The projects include a new Kahului community center, a new gym for South Maui Community Park and Molokai and Upcountry water capacity projects.

Mayor Alan Arakawa had objected to personnel and expenditure restrictions on the solid waste management fund, which he said would lead to shorter hours at county landfill and eliminate residential trash pickup on holidays.

County spokesman Rod Antone says the override will lead to a reduction in landfill and refuse services.

The $604 million county budget for fiscal year 2014-15 takes effect July 1.
