Man indicted on attempted-murder charge
An Oahu grand jury indicted a 55-year-old homeless man Tuesday on charges of attempted murder, burglary and terroristic threatening for allegedly attempting to suffocate a 65-year-old Kailua woman in her home while she was sleeping.
Darryl Thomas is being held in the Oahu Community Correctional Center, unable to post bail of $1 million.
According to a police affidavit, Thomas broke into the home of Wilma Kam just after midnight June 18 on Old Kalanianaole Road in Kailua.
Police said Thomas forced his way into the victim’s second-floor bedroom window, got on top of her and tried to gag her with a cloth.
Kam said Thomas had been ordered to stay away from her and her home by the courts in September.
Police found Thomas hiding in thick vegetation at 1:45 a.m. while searching Kam’s property.
Police said Kam identified Thomas, and while being escorted by police to a car, Thomas allegedly yelled: "This ain’t over. I am going to kill you and your family," while looking at the victim’s home.
Ocean victim identified as California man
Maui police identified a 63-year-old man who died Wednesday after he was found floating off Black Rock in Lahaina as Eugene Chu of San Bernardino, Calif.
Police said beachgoers spotted Chu at 11:22 a.m. Wednesday floating face down 75 yards from shore.
Beachgoers pulled him to shore and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and fire personnel continued CPR, but could not revive him.
Inmate out on work furlough is arrested
Police have arrested an Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate who failed to return to the facility from a work furlough program Wednesday.
Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said inmate Justin Kondo was arrested Wednesday afternoon after failing to return to the OCCC at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Kondo is serving time for first-degree burglary and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. His parole hearing is scheduled for July 15.
Suspect allegedly assaults security guard
Prosecutors on Tuesday charged a 42-year-old homeless man with assaulting a 61-year-old female security guard Sunday at an Aina Haina shopping center.
Joshua Lagrange was charged with second-degree assault. His bail was set at $30,000.
Police said Lagrange assaulted the security officer about 8:45 a.m. Sunday after she asked him to leave the shopping center. The woman was taken in serious condition to the hospital with a head injury.
Police found the man in the area and arrested him at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Niuiki Circle and Kalanianaole Highway.
