Truck driver dies after crashing into wall in Kaaawa
A pickup truck crashed into a rock wall near Kaaawa Elementary School, critically injuring the truck’s 30-year-old driver Friday night, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.
The driver later died, officials said.
The accident happened at about 11:44 p.m. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, according to EMS.
Police closed Kamehameha Highway and contraflowed traffic around the area while Traffic Division officers investigated the accident. The road reopened by about 3 a.m.
Pedestrian injured while jaywalking across Ala Moana
A 20-year-old military man was critically injured Friday night after he was hit by a van while jaywalking on Ala Moana Boulevard.
Police said the man was seen heading mauka in a crosswalk near Coral Street about 11:10 p.m., but did not have a walk signal and the light was red.
A Honolulu man driving a 1998 Nissan Quest van hit the pedestrian while passing through a green light in the downtown direction, police said. The driver pulled over and waited for police.
Police said the pedestrian suffered major head and body injuries and was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center.
Police said the area was well-lit by street lamps.
Man is charged in Kona attack
Hawaii island police say they’ve charged a man in the shooting of a fellow tenant at his South Kona home.
Monte Moreau, 44, of Honaunau was charged with attempted murder Saturday after being taken into custody Thursday night.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. Thursday at a rented house in the 83-5300 block of Highway 11 in Honaunau, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Officers arrived there to find a 52-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. They arrested Moreau, another tenant, at the scene, according to a police release.
The victim remains in critical but stable condition at Kona Community Hospital, while Moreau remains at the Kona police cellblock as detectives continue to investigate the incident, the release stated.
