Breakfast plate to aid charity
Enjoy Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice, and in exchange you’ll be helping the Pacific Gateway Center, a nonprofit organization committed to empowering immigrants and low-income people with social services, training, and culinary and retail micro-enterprise opportunities.
The center is the focus of this year’s Finance Factors Charity Breakfast, 6:30 to 9 a.m. Friday at 1164 Bishop St. Plates are $6.
Get tips on ‘foodscaping’
Matthew Lynch will speak on "Permaculture and Foodscaping" at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Mililani Public Library’s Quiet Room. The talk is free.
Lynch is the founder of the nonprofit Asia-Pacific Center for Regenerative Design and Permablitz Hawaii, a grassroots group that installs edible landscapes in residential yards for free.

Dinner, auction to benefit HUGS
Partake of a three-course dinner at "Wine and Dine," a benefit for HUGS (Help, Understanding & Group Support), July 17 at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Waterfront Plaza.
Dinner selections include filet mignon, stuffed chicken breast, barbecued shrimp or fresh fish, Caesar salad and bread pudding with whiskey sauce.
Appetizers and a silent auction begin at 5 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Cost is $150. Register by Friday at bbgfoundation.com.
Scientists to give GMO talk
Scientists discuss "Roundup and GMOs — Are We Gambling With the Future of Food?" at 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Toho No Hikari Hawaii Center.
Speakers include Stephanie Seneff, senior research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The center is at 3510 Nuuanu Pali Drive.
On Saturday, Seneff will join Lorrin Pang, the state Department of Health’s officer for Maui County, and farmer Fred Lau for a tour of Mari’s Gardens, followed by a panel. The tour begins at 9 a.m. Mari’s Gardens is at 94-415 Makapipipi St. in Mililani. To register, call 292-1179.

Learn to make ‘kraut chee’
Vegetable fermentation expert Ryan Peters will share his skills at a "Get Cultured! Vegetable Fermentation Class" at 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Cookspace Hawaii in Ward Warehouse.
Peters will teach how to make sauerkraut, kim chee and kraut chee, and share the health benefits of probiotic fermented veggies.
