Maluenda keeps winning ways going
After winning the Ladies Flight at the Barbers Point Invitational on Saturday, Sydney Maluenda followed it up with a victory in the 58th annual Waialae Women’s Invitational on Tuesday.
Maluenda won the overall low gross championship, firing rounds of 75-86 at Waialae Country Club.
WCC member Sandy Miyamoto captured the overall low net title in a playoff with Young Leskovec. Both finished at 142.
Leskovec took low-net honors in B Flight. Other low-net winners were Vivian Sasaki (Championship Flight) at 147, Alice Ridgeway (A) and Barbara Schroeder (C) at 146 and Gail Tandall (D) at 144.
Low gross flight champions were Lisa H. Lee (Championship), who shot 164, Kyong Omura (A) at 171, Kate Huntsinger (B) at 184, Sunny Floyd (C) at 187 and Hideko Yamada (D) at 197.
Maluenda is a Kapolei graduate about to start her sophomore year at George Fox University. She tees off this morning in the qualifying round of the Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.
Local tennis standout takes third at tourney
Fifth-seeded Makoa Hotz of Waipahu took third in the USTA Georgia Junior Tennis Tournament by defeating third-seeded Valentin Stelea of Atlanta, 6-2, 7-5.
Hotz responded with the victory after losing in the semifinals.
