‘Iolani senior Rose Huang eliminated Punahou junior Mariel Galdiano in an opening-round match of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash., on Wednesday.
Huang won the eighth and ninth holes to take a 3-up lead at the turn. Galdiano birdied the 10th to cut her deficit, but the Hawaii juniors each played the next seven holes in 1 under, Huang closing her 2-up win with par on the 17th.
Maui’s Cassy Isagawa was 2 down through four holes against Blair Lewis, from California. The University of Oregon senior won six of the next eight holes to go 3 up, but then lost Nos. 14-16 and her lead.
Isagawa and Lewis went to extra holes and Isagawa prevailed on the 20th, winning with a par.
Honolulu’s Kaci Masuda had five birdies to defeat Luciane Lee, of Brazil, 6 and 4. Former state high school champ Eimi Koga also advanced with a 3-and-1 victory over Florida’s Alex Milan. Koga, now a sophomore at Washington, won four holes in a five-hole span to go ahead 3-up at the 11th.
Hilo’s Nani Yanagi lost to Sirene Blair, of Utah, 5 and 4. Honolulu’s Alice Kim rallied, winning four holes in a six-hole span to catch Katharine Patrick, of Texas, in their match. Patrick finally won the match on the 20th hole, with par.
State high school champion John Oda, the only golfer from Hawaii to survive qualifying in the U.S. Amateur Public Links at Sand Creek Station, won his first-round match, 4 and 3, over New Jersey’s Jacob Stockl. Oda, heading to UNLV on a golf scholarship this fall, birdied the first two holes and was 6-up after 11 in Newton, Kansas.
Okamura tied for 27th in eGolf Tour event
Maui’s Garrett Okamura is tied for 27th after Wednesday’s opening round of the eGolf Tour’s Cabarrus Classic, in Concord, N.C.
Okamura, who was 18th in his last start, shot 2-under-par 70 at Cabarrus Country Club, with three birdies and a bogey. He is five shots out of first going into the second round of the 54-hole tournament.
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa opened with a 73.
Hayashida tied for lead in Jr. World Championships
Mililani’s Joshua Hayashida is tied for the lead heading into today’s final round of the Callaway Junior World Championships, in San Diego.
The boys 9-10 division is playing at the par-62 Welk Resort San Diego Fountains Executive Course.
Hayashida shot rounds of 63-58 and is tied with two others at 121. Honolulu’s Go Nakatsukasa is two back.
Honolulu’s Minny Byun is also in contention in girls 9-10. She shot a second-round 61 and is tied for ninth at 5-over 117, eight strokes out of first, at Lomas Santa Fe Exec Golf Course.
Honolulu’s Moxiao Xia shot 59 and is four strokes out of first in boys 7-8, at 123. The younger age divisions end Thursday while the 15-17 divisions play 72 holes and finish Friday.
