Keiki can get in touch with their wild sides with a three-step transformation at this month’s free Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday, "Natural, Unnatural, Supernatural," at the Honolulu Museum of Art and Spalding House.
The process starts at the Beretania Street museum. First, kids will make themselves a pair of new hands using Lego, felt and fake fur. Next, they can mix and match wearable animal parts. (A tail could be so useful!)
The final step is a free shuttle ride away at Spalding House in Makiki Heights, where the transformation will be completed using feathers, yarn, markers and more to create a head.
In addition to the craft activity, the museum will offer entertainment by the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific’s jazz ensemble Papana (11-11:50 a.m.), a theatrical performance by Willow Chang (noon-2:50 p.m.) and folk-pop-classical songs by Streetlight Cadence.
At 11:10 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Doris Duke Theatre will screen "Earthwise," a 60-minute collection of nine shorts about our planet, exploring magnificent creatures and fragile ecosystems. The film is intended for children ages 8 and older and includes Spanish, Mandarin and French subtitles. Admission to the theater is $3 for adults and $1 for children 13 years and younger.
The free event starts at 11 a.m., with activities ending at 3 p.m. Spalding House closes at 4 and the museum at 5.
