UH softball adds Georgia Tech transfer
Kanani Aina Cabrales, a transfer from Georgia Tech, will join the University of Hawaii softball team this fall.
As a freshman for the Yellow Jackets, she appeared in 36 games as both a designated player and pitcher. She was fourth on the team with a .333 batting average and had 18 RBI. While in the circle, Cabrales was 7-10 with a 5.70 earned run average.
Aina Cabrales was born in California and attended high school in Georgia.
2 PacWest schools gain full membership
Azusa Pacific University and Point Loma Nazarene University were formally approved by the NCAA Division II Management Council for full membership on Wednesday. Both schools will officially join the Pacific West Conference Sept. 1, which will bring the total number of members to 11 schools that will compete in 15 sports for the 2014-15 academic year.
Weightlifting medals for Kobashigawa
Hawaii’s Brey Kobashigawa won three bronze medals during last weekend’s USA Weightlifting Senior National Championships in Salt Lake City.
Kobashigawa, competing in the 56kg class, placed third in the snatch (89 pounds), clean & jerk (105), and total (194). The 2013 ‘Iolani graduate was the lightest competitor out of seven in the weight class and was 41 pounds off the winning total of 235 by Michael Fox.
In the 69kg division, Maui’s Keaka Paleka, representing Vernon Patao Strength & Conditioning, tied for 17th out of 33 lifters. His total was 226 pounds, with 102 in snatch and 124 in clean & jerk.
Gymnast Alexander wins gold
Paul Alexander, 12, of Moanalua Elementary, took first place in the double mini-trampoline (DMT) Level 10 event at the USA Gymnastics Championships in Louisville, Ky. last week.
He represented Region 2 as the champion in the regional all-star competition, where he took first place in his age division. Alexander competed in the individual trampoline (TRI) event, where he finished eighth.
Other top three finishers from Hawaii included: Sydney Senter (DMT Youth Elite; 11-13 ), third place; Kayttie Nakamura (DMT Level 10; 11-12), second place and Maia Amano (DMT Level 9; 11-12), second place.
