He looks, eats and dresses local style. He’s even got a Spam musubi named after him — The Fluffy at Mac 24/7 in Waikiki — so it’s not surprising that comedian Gabriel Iglesias often is mistaken for a Hawaiian dude.
But his loyalists know he’s the hilarious Mexican with oversized charm.
"People thought I was local when I started going there," Iglesias said by phone from the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco last month. "It was natural — I fit in well."
The stand-up comedian and sometime actor is eager to expand his fan base via his first concert film, "The Fluffy Movie," opening Friday. The 97-minute movie was shot in San Jose, Calif., over two nights during Iglesias’ sold-out "Unity Through Laughter" tour that spanned more than 400 cities in 23 countries. The comic’s 2013 "Aloha Fluffy" special that was taped at Hawaii Theatre has been a staple on Comedy Central, and the big-screen release should heighten his comedic profile.
Iglesias, 38, was born in Chula Vista, Calif., the youngest of six children raised by a single mother. He is somewhat unique among the current crop of successful stand-up comedians in that his routine — which employs a mixture of storytelling, characters and sound effects — is mostly G-rated.

He is known as Fluffy because of his plus-size frame. (He likes to joke that he’s not fat, just fluffy.) When he dons his aloha shirts, he’s a walking, talking ad for the islands. The shirts with oversized floral designs and lei motifs are custom-made for him on the mainland.
"Because my weight has fluctuated, my shirts are smaller now," he said. "At one point, I was up to 6X and 445 pounds. I’ve lost 110 pounds, so now I’m a 3X, and I want to lose another 50 to get under 300."
Concerns about diabetes and other medical issues mandated the weight loss, achieved through a regimen of sensible eating. Iglesias has had knee surgery and suffered from anxiety and constant back pain requiring cortisone shots. As he slims down, he’s managed to minimize some of his health problems.
But, auwe, he can’t resist Spam musubi and macaroni salad whenever he’s in Hawaii.
"First thing I do is kick off my shoes or sandals and then go have some Spam musubi available just about anywhere and pick up sunscreen at ABC Stores."
Iglesias also loves loco moco, complete with the rice and gravy, but insists on a Spam substitute. "Burgers belong in a sandwich," he chuckled.
For at least five years running, Iglesias has performed in Hawaii in late November or early December. Fluffy fans can expect his next live Hawaii shows Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28 and 29, at the Blaisdell Arena.
"It’s a tradition for me to visit Thanksgiving time," he said.
That’s also time for him to renew his worship of Spam.
Iglesias will be featured in 20th Century Fox’s animated film "The Book of Life," in October, alongside Zoe Saldana and Channing Tatum. He will reteam with Tatum and Matthew McConaughey to reprise his role as Tobias in the "Magic Mike XXL" sequel scheduled for release next summer.
