Two pedestrians were killed in separate traffic accidents Tuesday in Kalihi.
Police said a man hit by a vehicle while crossing Kamehameha Highway near the Middle Street onramp Tuesday night in front of Oahu Community Correctional Center died at a hospital at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police said they haven’t been able to confirm the man’s age.
Lt. Charlene Lau, a Traffic Division spokeswoman, said the man crossed the highway, despite a "don’t walk" signal, at 9:01 p.m. and was struck by the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle, a 67-year-old Aiea woman, was heading Ewa on Kamehameha Highway and had the green light when she struck the pedestrian, Lau said. Town-bound drivers tried to warn the pedestrian, who had reached the median strip and continued to cross the road.
"As he was crossing on the makai side heading mauka, the vehicles heading town-bound were honking at him to let him know he was crossing against the red and that they had the green light," Lau said.
Police closed all Ewa-bound lanes on Kamehameha Highway between Laumaka and Middle streets while police investigated.
At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, a 49-year-old woman backing out of a private road in the 600 block of North Vineyard Boulevard hit a 60-year-old pedestrian, Lau said.
An ambulance took the pedestrian in critical condition to a hospital, where he died. Because the accident occurred on private property, the death will not be included in the official Oahu traffic fatality list, Lau said.
There have been 39 traffic deaths on Oahu roads so far this year, compared with 38 the same time last year.
In 2013, there were 19 pedestrian deaths, with eight of the victims older than age 60.

» June 26 — Alicia Moreno, 79, died after she was hit by an SUV in a crosswalk on Kailua Road.
» Feb. 26 — Barbara Kato, 70, died after she was hit by a garbage truck in a crosswalk at North King Street and Gulick Avenue.
» Feb. 4 — Clarita Ocol, 67, died at a hospital after being struck by a pickup truck on North King Street.
