China Sea Wolf takes Billfish tournament
China Sea Wolf came out on top after the final day of the 55th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off Kailua-Kona on Friday.
The team scored 1,986 points over the five days of competition, helped when angler Liu Ming landed a Pacific blue marlin that was estimated at 250 pounds, the biggest of the tournament. Team Friends of Kenya was second with 1,425 points and Olympian Dream Fishing Club of Japan was third with 1,129.
Kevin Nakamaru of Northern Lights finished on top of the captain standings with 2,027 points to David Bertuleit’s 1,650 aboard Kona Seafari.
Kauai’s Cope in Juniors final at US Open
Kauai’s Brianna Cope advanced to the final round in the Women’s Pro Junior division at the Vans USOpen of Surfing on Friday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Cope scored 12.16 in 1- to 3-foot waves in the semifinals, beating out Chelsea Tuach (4.94), Reika Noro (1.00) and the North Shore’s Bailey Nagy (8.27). Cope will face Meah Collins in Saturday’s final heat. Collins scored 11.37 to edge local surfers Mahina Maeda (10.13) and Tatiana Weston-Webb (9.75). The final is scheduled for 11:20 a.m. Hawaii time.
In the women’s quarterfinals, Honolulu’s Carissa Moore faces Tyler Wright and Kauai’s Malia Manuel matches up with Nikki Van Dijk at 8:30 a.m. Hawaii time.
