Hurricane Iselle bulks up to category 2
Hurricane Iselle strengthened into a category 2 storm in the eastern Pacific on Saturday and is near major hurricane status. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Genevieve moved south of the islands.
Iselle has sustained winds of 110 mph, just under the 111 mph threshold for a category 3 hurricane. The storm was 1,615 miles east of Hilo, moving west at 9 mph, at 5 p.m. Saturday. Iselle should begin to weaken as it moves over cooler waters in the central Pacific, forecasters said.
Blue Angels to perform shows next month
The blue-and-gold jets of the Navy flight demonstration squadron will be visiting Hawaii in September.
Two free Blue Angels shows will take place 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 27 and 28 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
In addition to the Blue Angels’ F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, the Leap Frogs, the Navy parachute team, will perform. There will also be demonstrations by the Blue Angels’ C-130 Hercules support aircraft, aka "Fat Albert," and a C-17 cargo jet.
On the ground, visitors can enjoy static displays of vintage and modern aircraft, food booths, rides and games.
