Fire destroys carport in hard-hit Nanawale area of Hawaii island
Fire destroyed a carport at a home in storm-damaged Nanawale in Pahoa Thursday, Hawaii County Fire officials report.
The fire was reported at 5:41 p.m.at Forest Drive in Pahoa. It was under control at 6:03 p.m.
Damage, which was limited to the carport, was estimated at $50,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Nanawale is still recovering from Tropical Storm Iselle.
On Thursday, about 800 customers remained without power in the area, most in Nanawale Estates.

The storm caused extensive damage in that area, with many streets impacted by fallen trees, downed power lines and damaged utility poles, Hawaiian Electric Co. officials said.
It’s not known if the fire was related to storm damage or recovery efforts.
