Crown Resorts tries again to set up presence on Strip

James Packer’s Crown Resorts Ltd. has announced plans to build a megaresort located center-Strip on the site of the former New Frontier. It’s at least the third attempt by Crown to set up shop in Las Vegas, with prior failed attempts involving a buyout of the Cannery casinos, a 20 percent stake in the Fontainebleau, and plans for another north-Strip casino on the old Wet’n’Wild site.

Details about the as-yet-unnamed resort have not been released, but construction is expected to begin in 2015, with a hoped-for completion date in 2018.

» Shrimp price raised: One of the all-time great Vegas values has gotten a little less so. The price of the Golden Gate shrimp cocktail has been boosted a buck to $3.99.

After decades at 50 cents and then 99 cents, the price has moved steadily upward. It’s still terrific, but that bargain label is getting stretched a bit. The shrimp is available 24 hours in the Du-par’s coffee shop.

» GameWorks is back: GameWorks, the arcade that operated near the MGM Grand until 2012, has reopened at the Town Square shopping district at the far south end of the Strip. The 7,000-square-foot venue features an eight-lane bowling alley and a social-gaming zone with 80 PCs for local area network multiplayer gaming and "e-sports" tournaments.

» Very happy hour: The Art Bar at the Downtown Grand has a happy hour with half price on everything on the menu, both food and drinks. It runs daily from 5 to 7 p.m.

» Sugar Factory closing: The original Sugar Factory is shutting down. Opened in 2009 at the Mirage, the store that spawned multiple Las Vegas Sugar Factories is set to close at the beginning of September, with plans to move to a bigger location.

QUESTION: When does the casino on the old Sahara property open?

ANSWER: It’s open now. SLS Las Vegas opened at midnight on Saturday. Check this column next week for details.
