Hawaii doesn’t ‘resemble’ U.S.?
The Aloha State prides itself on things that set it apart, so it was perhaps an honor to rank low on a list of cities that are most typically American.
Wallet Hub, a personal finance social network, released its 2014 "Metro Areas that Most and Least Resemble the U.S."
On a roster of 366 cities, Honolulu came in at No. 341.
Well, maybe not all the criteria for ranking reflect well on this city:
WalletHub based scores on 26 metrics, including age, gender and income, household makeup and housing tenure. Perhaps our relative income downgrades us, as well as our affordable-housing problems.
But our distinctive cultural makeup is a bragging point for most of us here.
Most resembling the U.S., according to the list, is Nashville, and the Texas border town of McAllen ranks dead last.
One has to wonder, in this era of the increasingly majority status for minorities, what it means to "resemble the U.S." anyway.
Go Warriors, and fans go early!
Way to take one for the team, Department of Transportation.
The state DOT reversed itself and canceled major H-1 freeway construction work near the airport viaduct previously scheduled for Saturday, lest University of Hawaii football fans face gridlock on their way to the gridiron.
Kickoff for UH’s season opener against the University of Washington is at 4:30 p.m., and it’s still a good idea to head out in plenty of time for Aloha Stadium.
Game-day traffic is never pleasant, even under the best of circumstances.
