Body of missing scuba diver recovered
The Coast Guard recovered a body Monday believed to be that of a missing scuba diver off of Poipu, Kauai.
The Kauai Fire Department launched a search for a missing scuba diver at 1:35 a.m. Two scuba divers who were with him Sunday night off of Koloa Landing reported him missing. Fire rescue discovered the man’s dive light in shallow shoreline waters.
The Coast Guard joined search efforts. The fire department reported the diver’s body was found floating face-down roughly 1 mile offshore of Brennecke’s Beach.
Maili man charged with assault, burglary
A 21-year-old Maili man is awaiting a court appearance after being charged with assaulting a woman who had a temporary restraining order against him.
Clement Holloway Jr. of Kulahanai Street was charged Saturday with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault and felony abuse. His bail was set at $30,000.
Police said Holloway broke into the 21-year-old woman’s home in Waianae and assaulted her, then fled. The incident occurred about 12:15 a.m. Aug. 19.
Police arrested Holloway at his home Friday.
Woman charged under new abuse law
An Aiea woman was charged Saturday under a new state law that makes domestic abuse a felony if committed in front of a child under 14.
Monica Shareen Nalani Pires, 38, is expected to appear in court Tuesday for one count of felony abuse of a household or family member. Her bail was set at $30,000.
Police said Pires assaulted a 14-year-old boy in front of her other children who were under the age of 14 at about 9 p.m. Aug. 23.
Pires was arrested Friday in Punaluu.
Under a law that took effect June 20, domestic abuse is a Class C felony if it takes place in front of a child younger than 14. The maximum penalty is five years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Otherwise, domestic abuse is a misdemeanor for the first two offenses. Conviction for a first offense can result in 48 hours in jail and 30 days in jail for a second offense within one year. The suspect could be charged with a Class C felony for a third or subsequent offense within two years.
