Rainbow Wahine drop in AVCA poll
The Hawaii women’s volleyball team dropped three spots into a tie for 20th in the first AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll of the regular season.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-1) were at No. 17 in the preseason poll announced three weeks ago. It was the lowest preseason ranking for the program since the poll began in 1982.
Hawaii, which lost to previous No. 25 Arizona State on Saturday, was tied with North Carolina (2-1). The Tar Heels, who opened the season ranked No. 20, were swept Saturday by then-No. 11 Illinois. ASU (3-0) moved up eight spots, replacing the Wahine at No. 17.
Penn State (3-0), receiving 35 first-place votes, remained No. 1. Stanford (15 votes) and Texas (5) traded spots at Nos. 2 and 3, the Cardinal (2-0) moving up a spot and the Longhorns (3-0) down a spot.
Wisconsin (2-0) received the remaining five votes and jumped two spots to No. 4. Rounding out the top 10 were Washington (3-0), USC (3-0), Purdue (3-0), Florida State (2-0), Illinois (3-0) and BYU (3-0).
Hawaii returns to the Stan Sheriff Center for the Hawaiian Airlines Classic on Thursday against New Mexico, which was among a list of schools receiving votes. The field also includes No. 22 Oregon and St. John’s.
HPU men’s soccer victorious vs. BYUH
Three goals in seven minutes aided the Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team to a 4-1 win at BYU-Hawaii (0-1) on Monday afternoon. Chris Campbell, Ryo Sugihara, Erik Kemsies and Brais Garcia each scored for the Sharks (2-0).
