Girl, 4, dies after being discovered in parked vehicle
A 4-year-old girl died after she was found unresponsive inside a vehicle at an apartment complex parking lot in Lahaina.
Police said the child was found at about 1 p.m. Friday in the vehicle at a parking lot at Honokowai Kauhale, 3500 Lower Honoapiilani Road. Police, fire and paramedics responded to the scene and conducted lifesaving measures. She was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she later died.
Police were withholding the child’s identification Tuesday.
In a news release, Lt. William Juan, spokesman for the Maui Police Department, said, "The child was not accidentally left in a hot vehicle, and the incident was reported by a parent."
Juan declined to say how she got into the vehicle and whether she entered the vehicle on her own. He said the child’s death is ruled as an accident as an investigation continues.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine the cause of death.
