A 39-year-old Waipahu man has been charged with murder in connection with the child abuse beating death last year of his 6-week-old son.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging Joel N. Asuncion with second-degree murder. Circuit Judge Richard Perkins set bail at $150,000.
Gabriel Sage Raider Asuncion Membrere died May 14.
Police said they received a report that the boy was found unresponsive in the home. City emergency medical workers took Membrere in critical condition to an Aiea hospital, where he died.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office initially said the cause of death was pending investigation.
Police, however, arrested Asuncion on suspicion of murder a day after his son died. They later released him without charges.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has since determined the cause of death but is not publicly releasing it.
Asuncion has felony convictions for burglary and theft. He also has three misdemeanor abuse convictions.
