Ex-supervisor charged with stealing welfare benefits

HILO >> A former Big Island supervisor at the state Department of Human Services has been indicted on a felony theft charge.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports a Hilo grand jury indicted 52-year-old Jeanette Ryder of Mountain View on a count of stealing about $45,000 in welfare benefits.

State Deputy Attorney General Mike Kagami says Ryder created three fictitious accounts, put state money into them and drew the money out.

Kagami said Ryder used electronic benefit transfer cards and used numerous automated teller machines to withdraw money.

He says ATM surveillance photos showed Ryder removing the money.

The indictment says the theft occurred in January through March 2013.
