John Barbieto scored the go-ahead touchdown and a vicious Waianae defense came to life in the second half to lead the Seariders to a 21-13 homecoming victory over Castle on Friday night at Raymond Torii Field.
The Seariders never detoured from their smash-mouth option attack and it paid off in the second half, when they also hassled Castle backup quarterback Willie Ewaliko for seven of their eight sacks.
Barbieto rushed for 129 yards on 19 carries. He put Waianae (3-2, 3-2 OIA Red) ahead 14-7 with a 7-yard touchdown run to cap an 84-yard drive midway through the third quarter.
Nayton Kuresa (three and a half sacks), Justice Jardine and Maika Koko (two sacks each) went to work, making life tough for Ewaliko and the Castle offense.
Jardine made it 21-7 when he scooped up an Ewaliko fumble and ran home 3 yards to give the Seariders some breathing room with about five minutes left in the game.
The Knights never threatened again until they scored on the final play of the game, capping a determined last-gasp drive. Ewaliko, who completed 19 of 35 passes for 156 yards, tossed a 5-yard score to Isaiah Lewis as time expired. No extra-point try was attempted.
In the first half, Castle struck first after Royce Simeona-Townsend recovered a Waianae fumble on a punt return to set up the Knights at the Seariders’ 13.
On the next play, starting quarterback Stephen Lee connected with Lewis on an out pattern to the left for a 13-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 6:28 to go in the first quarter.
Waianae tied it at 7 early in the second quarter amid controversy. Castle’s Lee appeared to throw a forward pass to Sione Pikula that was dropped and hit the ground.
The Seariders’ Mosiah Brame picked up the ball and ran 22 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. The referees ruled that Lee’s toss was a lateral, making the dropped ball a free ball.
Neither team threatened for the rest of the first half in a defensive slugfest that included two turnovers by each team.
