Man drowns off Punaluu Black Sand Beach

A 53-year-old Puna man drowned Sunday off Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, Hawaii Police said.

Reginald Awaa of Mountain View was diving with family around 12:08 p.m. when he became distressed.  Police and fire officials pulled him from the water and transported him to Ka’u Hospital where he died at 1:35 p.m., police said.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
