Suspect charged in sexual assault at UH
Authorities have charged a 19-year-old Oregon man with multiple counts of sexual assault following his arrest at a University of Hawaii dormitory Sunday morning.
Tyler Strong was charged Monday with two counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of third-degree sexual assault. He posted bail of $60,000, and his first District Court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
Police said the victim is an 18-year-old woman.
The incident was reported to police at 5 a.m. Sunday. The suspect was arrested at 6 a.m. at Johnson Hall on Dole Street.
University officials would not say whether Strong or the woman is a student at UH-Manoa because the case is under investigation.
Car fire spreads to Big Isle townhouse
A Kailua-Kona townhouse fire, which began as a car fire Tuesday, resulted in $200,000 in damage.
The fire, reported at 1:09 p.m., was contained to a single home in the six-unit townhouse at 78-6833 Alii Drive.
Firefighters arrived at 1:22 p.m. and brought the blaze under control at 2:03 p.m. It was extinguished at 3:03 p.m.
The owner of Unit I-5 at Na Hale o Keauhou said she arrived home, parked her car in the carport and began to smell smoke a half-hour later, the Fire Department said in a news release. The woman saw the car on fire and called 911.
Firefighters found the carport and the second-floor bedroom above the carport fully engulfed in flames. The fire was spreading to the roof of the two-story building.
No one was injured in the fire.
Driver in Maui race crash makes bail
WAILUKU » A man arrested and charged after allegedly plowing into a group of people at the start of the Maui Marathon on Sunday morning has been released on bail.
Rustyn Pajimola-Aiu was arrested after allegedly driving an Acura sedan into a crowd waiting for the race to begin. Police say he hit a man and dragged him about 30 feet.
Pajimola-Aiu was charged with drunken driving and posted $1,200 bail. He couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Tuesday, and it’s not clear whether he has an attorney.
