Palama Settlement gala event will honor Thompson and Aipa
Palama Settlement is selling tickets to its second Malama Palama Gala on Oct. 25 to raise money to help children and other neighborhood residents.
Tihati Productions CEO Cha Thompson and surfboard shaper Ben Aipa, who spent their youth at Palama, are being honored for continuing to give back to one of Hawaii’s first social service agencies, a news release said.
Last year’s gala raised enough money to reopen the recreation program on weekends.
The semiformal event will be held in the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at 5:30 p.m. RSVPs must be received by Oct. 13. Top Hawaii entertainers and a silent auction will round out the evening. To purchase tickets, visit www.palamasettlement.org. Individual tickets are $250, and table sponsorships range from $2,500 to $15,000. For more information, call 848-2502 or email stawata@palamasettlement.org.
2 charged in boating thefts
Hawaii County police arrested and charged two men last week with stealing an aluminum skiff and an outboard motor in separate incidents.
Michael McCrum, 22, and Isaac Akina, 19, both of Kailua-Kona, were arrested Thursday after they were found near Keauhou Pier on the skiff after a victim found two men using his outboard motor that he had reported stolen. The 42-year-old Kailua-Kona man reported his motor had been stolen from his boat while it was tied to Kailua Pier.
Detectives learned that the skiff had been reported stolen during the burglary of two Weli Weli Beach homes Aug. 3.
On Friday police charged McCrum with burglary, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and three counts of theft. Bail was set at $47,000. Akina was charged with burglary, criminal property damage and two counts of theft. Bail was set at $9,500.
Evacuation signs installed
The Kauai Civil Defense Agency completed installation of 128 tsunami evacuation route signs around the island in August.
County officials held a blessing Tuesday at Wailua Beach.
Assisting in the sign installations were the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, state Highways Division, county Roads Division, Kauai Police Department, Kauai Fire Department, Citizens Emergency Response Teams and county Information Technology Division.
The project follows the completed update of Kauai’s tsunami evacuation zone maps, which were posted on the county’s website in January.
