Enter scary video contest for $500 prize
Make your own scary movie in the annual Halloween Video Contest sponsored by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now. Entries must not exceed 5 minutes and must comprise original content that has not appeared elsewhere. (Videos with excessive gore or violence will not be considered.)
A $500 cash prize will be awarded to the winner of the open division. A $200 cash prize will be awarded to the winner of the student division (for students through grade 12). Students are welcome to enter the open division if they dare!
Upload entries to YouTube and email the URL to features@staradvertiser.com along with information on the video and the filmmakers; please specify whether an open or student entry. Entries must be received by 12:01 a.m. Oct. 20. Winners will be announced Oct. 31 on Hawaii News Now’s "Sunrise" and in the Star-Advertiser’s Today section.
The contest is open to Hawaii residents only; Oahu Publications Inc. and Hawaii News Now contributors, employees and their family members are not eligible. The judges reserve the right to withhold or modify prizes in the event of insufficient entries. The judges’ decisions are final. By entering the contest, you grant Hawaii News Now and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser a royalty-free license to use your video.

Spooky story could win $200 cash prize
Spin your most haunting tale of horror and the supernatural in our annual Halloween Fiction Contest. Entries are limited to 700 words and must be original work never before published. The winner will receive a $200 cash prize and the story will appear in the Today section Oct. 26. Second prize is $100.
New this year are separate categories for elementary and middle school students, with a $50 prize in each division. Entries are limited to 400 words and should include name, grade, school and contact information.
The deadline for all entries is Oct. 15. One entry per person.
