Wahine host fall tourney
About a week after its first official practice, the UHwomen’s tennis team faces its first tests of the fall against Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific in the three-day ‘Anuenue Invitational.
Matches start at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the UH Tennis Complex. The tournament concludes Monday with matches starting at 8 a.m.
The Rainbow Wahine return six letterwinners and most of the Rainbow Wahine opened practice last Saturday while UH sophomore Cindy Nguyen began her season with a three-set loss to Texas A&M’s Rutuja Bhosale in the first round of pre-qualifying at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships last Saturday in Los Angeles.
» Two Rainbow Warriors picked up first-round wins in pre-qualifying in the Saint Francis Heath System/ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., last weekend. Seniors Pavel Liska and Nils Schuhmann won their opening matches before falling.
SAILING
UH opens in San Diego
Andy Johnson begins his 25th year as coach of the UH co-ed sailing team at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Match Race Championship in San Diego this weekend.
The regatta runs Saturday and Sunday. UH reached the finals last year and placed second behind Stanford.
GOLF
Wahine off to Washington
The Rainbow Wahine golf team has the weekend off, but will head back to the mainland early next week for the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash. The Wahine finished eighth at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Invitational over the weekend. Sophomore Izzy Leung was three strokes out of the lead after 36 holes but struggled to an 81 in the final round on Sunday. She still posted the fifth top-10 finish of her career with a total of 13-over 229.
CROSSCOUNTRY
Week off for Wahine
Following a 21st-place finish in the Stanford Invitational last Saturday, the Rainbow Wahine have a bye this week and resume the schedule Oct. 11 in the Chaminade Invitational in Laie.
Freshman Montana Martinez completed the 6K race last week at Stanford in 24:31 to finish 233rd overall.
