Hawaii quarterback Taylor Graham took most of the reps with the No. 1 offense on Tuesday, opening the possibility of an expanded role or change at the top of the depth chart.
Head coach Norm Chow said he was doing his due diligence in exploring options. Chow said no decision has been made on a starter for Saturday’s game against Wyoming at Aloha Stadium. Ikaika Woolsey has started all five games, all against non-conference opponents.
"Well, obviously, we needed to look," said Chow, whose Rainbow Warriors are 1-4. "We’re obviously not satisfied with what’s going on. We need to make some changes if we have to. We’re going to look, and make some decisions."
The Warriors are 108th out of 125 FBS teams in total offense (336.0 yards per game) and 100th in passing offense (188.0 yards per game).
Woolsey is 115th in passing efficiency with an 88.5 rating. He has completed 45.7 percent of his passes. Graham has played one series this season.
"As we go along in practice, we did give Taylor a lot more looks," Chow said. "But we also gave some others a lot more looks, as well, maybe Taylor being the most obvious. No one is happy with where we’re at."
Graham is regarded as a drop-back quarterback, although he also is an effective runner in crucial situations. Woolsey is a dual-skilled quarterback who can pass and scramble.
"You have to (fit) the style to the quarterback we decide to go with," Chow said.
If the Warriors were to start Graham, Chow noted Woolsey can "reflect and think about things and learn. (Woolsey) has a nice attitude."
Chow said Graham and Woolsey both had strong practices on Tuesday.
Quarterbacks coach Jordan Wynn said Woolsey "has to play better. He knows that. He wants to be good. It’s not like he doesn’t care. He’ll come out and have another good week of practice."
