Man’s body recovered from submerged car
Maui firefighters recovered a man’s body found inside a car submerged in waters below a scenic lookout along Honoapiilani Highway on Saturday.
According to the Maui Fire Department, the sedan was discovered around 8:45 a.m. by three skin divers who were sport-fishing in the area south of Lahaina.
Fire rescue personnel found the vehicle about 40 feet below the top of the cliff. It was submerged in about 10 feet of water and was about 30 feet off the shoreline.
The body was removed from the vehicle and airlifted to a landing zone at the lookout, officials said.
Pedestrian dies after vehicle hits him
A 73-year-old man died Friday night after he was struck by a car while walking in a marked crosswalk in Kalihi.
The motorist, a 56-year-old woman driving a 1994 Toyota Corolla and traveling westbound on School Street, struck the pedestrian at about 11:45 p.m. in a crosswalk near School and Houghtailing streets.
The man sustained head and body injuries and was transported to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, where he died.
Police do not believe speed and alcohol were factors in the collision.
The accident marks the 50th traffic fatality this year compared to 45 last year.
Big Isle moped crash kills 64-year-old
A 64-year-old man died Friday at the Queen’s Medical Center after sustaining injuries in a moped crash on Hawaii island.
Honolulu police said the man was injured Thursday and taken to Queen’s, where he died of his injuries.
Toddler found in pool is hospitalized
A 2-year-old boy was in serious condition Saturday after he was discovered submerged in the pool at Turtle Bay Resort.
People at the resort spotted the child at about 11:50 a.m. and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him until paramedics arrived and took the toddler to a hospital.
