Lu leads field at Turtle Bay
Shawn Lu finished 4 under par to claim the lead in the Turtle Bay Amateur Championship Flight on Saturday. Lu finished with a 68 on the Arnold Palmer Course, followed by Kyosuke Hara at 2-under 70 and Brent Grant at 71. Matthew Itagaki leads the B Flight with a score of 77 on the Arnold Palmer Course.
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday on the George Fazio Course with the Championship Flight leaders teeing off at the 10th hole at 8:55 a.m. Admission is free.
BYU-Hawaii’s Zhang falls in finals
Top-seeded Valentine Confalonieri defeated BYU-Hawaii’s Nannan (Dallas) Zhang 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the Division II women’s singles final of the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships on Saturday in Sumter, S.C. Confalonieri, of Lynn University, is the defending tournament champion and advances to the Super Bowl stage.
Zhang was the No. 2 seed and blanked Stephanie Hirsch of Indianapolis 6-0, 6-0 on Friday. She also defeated Midwestern State’s Kayla Casey 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday.
Hawaii Hilo soccer men edge Dixie State
Rhyen Eugenio scored in the 76th minute to lift Hawaii Hilo over Dixie State in a PacWest men’s soccer match Saturday in Hilo. Sophomore Anthony Novella earned the assist as he launched the ball to the 6-3 Eugenio, whose header snuck past goalie Hayden Matthews.
The Vulcans (5-6-1, 3-4 PacWest) picked up their offense in the second half with six shots on goal. The Storm (1-7-1, 1-4 PacWest) managed just two shots in the match.
» Point Loma blanked the Chaminade men’s soccer squad 2-0 Saturday at Saint Louis Field. Nico Tagaloa scored in the 10th minute on the Sea Lions’ only shot in the first half, and Matt Rose scored on a 35-yard shot in the 60th minute.
Chaminade (3-8, 2-5 PacWest) outshot Point Loma 25-9, but goalkeeper Avrin Yakou delivered seven saves for the Sea Lions (2-7-2, 2-3-1 PacWest).
» Colton Lamb found the back of the net with four minutes left to secure a 3-2 win for Azusa Pacific over the BYU-Hawaii men’s soccer team Saturday in Laie. Jeremy Bishop and Casey Sbrana also scored for the Cougars (7-2, 4-1 PacWest).
Zak Epplette scored 50 seconds into the game for the Seasiders (4-5-3, 4-1-1 PacWest) and Jace Green added his fifth goal in four games.
Chaminade soccer women lose
Point Loma’s Michaela Maes scored from 35 yards out to defeat the Chaminade women’s soccer team 1-0 Saturday at Saint Louis Field. Maes’ shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and sneaked past goalkeeper Lauren Ishii, who finished with six saves.
The Sea Lions (7-2, 6-0 PacWest) outshot the Silverswords 19-1, with eight shots on goal. Chaminade fell to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the PacWest.
» The Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer team fell to Dixie State 2-0 Saturday in Hilo. Erica Gonzalez scored the first goal for the Storm (5-5-1, 3-2 PacWest) in the 80th minute, followed by the Vulcans’ own goal in the 84th minute.
Jenna Hufford finished with 10 saves for Hawaii Hilo (5-3-4, 2-2-3 PacWest). The Vulcans were outshot 15-5 in the loss.
» Azusa Pacific scored in the 30th minute to defeat the BYU-Hawaii women’s soccer team 1-0 Saturday in Laie. Amanda Hardy used a corner kick to lob the ball over BYU-Hawaii goalie Daniela Chacon to score for the Cougars (4-6-1, 2-2-1 PacWest). The Seasiders fall to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in PacWest play.
HPU outlasts Chaminade in five
Hawaii Pacific’s women’s volleyball team overcame a 4-0 deficit in the fifth set to defeat Chaminade 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14 Friday night at St. Andrew’s Priory.
The Sharks (7-7, 4-4 PacWest) outdug Chaminade 63-45 and maintained a balanced offense, with four players posting kills in double-digits. Kasey Thompson led the way with 15 kills, followed by Elizabeth Culpepper (14), Pomai Recca (13) and Haley Doerfler (12). Amanda Moriarty added a match-high 21 digs for HPU.
Kira Long finished with a team-high 17 kills and hit .444 for the Silverswords (10-8, 4-4 PacWest). Cassie Rushlow added 15 kills in the loss.
