Seasiders defeat Sharks with early lead
Senior midfielder Jace Green continued his scoring streak with his sixth goal in five matches to lift the BYU-Hawaii men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific on Friday at Atherton Field.
Green punched in the first goal of the match eight minutes in. Sophomore Pawel Dregan found the net two minutes later with a low shot past the goalkeeper to give the Seasiders (5-5-2, 5-1-1 PacWest) a 2-0 lead at the half.
HPU picked up the tempo in the second half with six shots on goal. Jackson Groves scored in the 87th minute to avoid the shutout for the Sharks (7-5-1, 5-2-0 PacWest).
Late goal lifts Sharks over Seasiders
With just three minutes left in regulation, Hawaii Pacific’s Erika Ellis lobbed a high shot over the goalkeeper to defeat BYU-Hawaii 2-1 Friday in a PacWest women’s soccer match at Atherton Field.
The Seasiders (3-9, 2-5 PacWest) took the lead just 54 seconds into the game when McKenzie Evans kicked in a rebound off goalkeeper Kelby Boswell. HPU responded in the second half with Ashlyn Ubongen’s goal in the 63rd minute off an assist by Stefanie Catone.
The Sharks (7-4-1, 4-3 PacWest) outshot BYU-Hawaii 11-9 with eight shots on goal.
Cal Baptist holds off UH Hilo in 5
Lauren Hackett recorded a team-high 25 kills to help the California Baptist women’s volleyball team pull off a five-set win over host Hawaii-Hilo 25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 23-25, 15-12 on Thursday.
Michelle Waber added 17 kills for the Lancers (11-6, 7-2 PacWest), while setter Jordyn Siko posted 59 assists.
UH-Hilo’s Marley Strand-Nicolaisen and Callie Aberle carried their offense with 27 and 21 kills, respectively. The Vulcans fall to 4-9 overall and 3-7 in the PacWest.
HPU upsets Point Loma in 4
Hawaii Pacific’s Pomai Recca pounded a match-high 19 kills with a team-high 18 digs to upset Point Loma 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22 at St. Andrew’s Priory Gym on Thursday.
The Sharks (8-8, 6-4 PacWest) outdug the Sea Lions 77-60.
» Suncica Bakic and Cassie Rushlow had 14 kills as Chaminade beat Point Loma 25-12, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 15-10 at McCabe Gym on Friday.
Chaminade is 11-10 overall, 4-8 in the PacWest. The Sea Lions fell to 12-8 and 9-3 after back-to-back losses.
