Scattered power outages, beach closures, gusty winds and scattered showers are reported as tropical storm Ana brushes near Kauai and Niihau.

“If at all possible, it is best to stay indoors and off roadways throughout the duration of the storm as hazardous conditions are expected to continue across the island,” said Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr.

A Kauai County spokeswoman said a tree fell on Maluhia Road, also known as Tree Tunnel Road, in Koloa early Sunday morning. The road was closed in both directions.

Crews responded to another downed tree that blocked one lane of Puuopae Road in Wailua Homesteads.

Both roads have been reopened around 12:10 p.m.

So far, the Kauai Island Utility has been able to restore power to most residents, a county spokeswoman said. 

The state Department of Transportation has closed Nawiliwili Harbor and Port Allen Harbor.  All small boat harbors across Kauai are also closed, Kauai officials said.

Ocean Safety officials announced that all beaches from Anahola to Kekaha are closed today, including Anahola, Kealia, Lydgate, Poipu, Salt Pond and Kekaha beaches because of hazardous ocean conditions and flying debris.

Wailua Golf Course is also closed today, officials said.

All green waste services at transfer stations islandwide are also closed until further notice due to muddy and unsafe conditions.

The American Red Cross opened emergency shelters across the island.  The shelter at Koloa Elementary closed at 1:30 p.m. because it was empty, county officials said.  The shelter at Kauai War Memorial Convention hall remains open.

The shelter that was opened overnight at Waimea High School closed at 7:30 a.m. when no one reported there.
