LAS VEGAS >> The Nevada Taxicab Authority has approved a rate hike that would make Clark County cab rides the second most expensive among mainland metropolitan areas with tourism-based economies.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the board approved a more than 8 percent rate increase on Monday, although it’s unclear when the new prices will take effect. The authority must first get approval to use funds that will pay overtime for vehicle inspectors and change the meters on about 3,000 cabs operating in Las Vegas.

The base taxi rate will rise from $3.30 to $3.45, with the cost per one-thirteenth mile rising from 20 cents to 22 cents.

It’s first time the rates have changed since 2008.

They will be higher than New York or San Francisco, but lower than Atlantic City’s rates.
