The state Board of Education is giving Hawaii’s public schools superintendent an "exceeds expectations" rating for the current year.

The board said Tuesday public schools have made exceptional progress under Kathryn Matayoshi’s leadership.

It says Matayoshi continues to perform well by increasing departmental transparency, accountability and carrying out strategic initiatives.

Matayoshi received an "exceptional" rating in her evaluation last year. Her rating this year was lower in reflection of the board’s higher expectations and goals.

Matayoshi was named superintendent in 2010. The board this year reappointed her to serve another three years.

Hawaii was one of four jurisdictions to see improved average math scores for both fourth and eighth graders in last year’s National Assessment of Educational Progress results.
