Punahou’s Anastasia Saili and University’s Nicholas Lacaden earned first-place medals Friday night at the ILH bowling championships at Hickam Bowling Center.
Saili finished with a three-game total of 630 this week to beat Hawaii Baptist’s Zhi Qing Sun (610) by 20 pins. Maryknoll’s Kaycie Yamasaki (592) took third.
"There’s a lot of factors in my success — my parents, friends and coaches," said Saili, who finished in seventh place at states last year and will try to improve on that finish at this year’s states, which run Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 in Kailua-Kona. "At first, I struggled with my confidence and thanks to my supporters, this season I decided to believe in myself."
Sun is part of the Eagles’ team that placed second to undefeated Sacred Hearts (30-0) in the ILH regular-season standings. Both squads are headed to states in search of the team title.
Hailey Gainiron (564), in fifth place, was the Lancers’ highest singles finisher. She also teamed with Caitlin Cunningham to take first place in doubles (1,146) over second-place Casey Kawano and Saili (1,105) of the Buffanblu.
Lacaden (653) won by 11 pins on the boys side over Hawaii Baptist’s Logan Takeda (642), and Mid-Pacific’s Jordan Lee (606) took third.
"I feel very blessed and I feel like I did a good job," said Lacaden, who turned his sights to the states. "If I can get on my roll, I can accomplish (a win at states). I need to focus."
Lacaden’s University team missed out on qualifying for states by one game.
Takeda is among the top bowlers for the Eagles boys team that topped the ILH in the regular season and will be chasing the state team title along with second-place Punahou.
Brandon Takao (534), in 17th place, was the Buffanblu’s high singles bowler.
Hawaii Baptist’s Bailey Lee and Owen Saito (1,188) won the ILH boys doubles championship over Damien’s Alika Vendiola and Taniela Tuihalafatai (1,119).
Vendiola finished the regular season with the highest boys average.
