The Coast Guard reopened the port of Nawiliwili on Kauai, Sunday after finding no apparent obstructions in the water nor hazards to safe navigation after a tug and barge ran aground near the entrance to the harbor Friday evening.

On Sunday, a 30-foot by 15-foot skeg was discovered missing during a dive operation on the barge Maka Ala and Tug Moana Holo, prompting the Coast Guard to close the harbor as a precaution.

A skeg is similar to a rudder, but is a fixed extension to the stern of a barge which assists in steering.
