Chan earns top-3 finish
‘Iolani alum Lorens Chan tied for third Wednesday at the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle, in San Martin, Calif. The UCLA junior was among three Bruins in the top 10, leading the nation’s sixth-ranked team to its third fall title.
Chan shot rounds of 71-67-68 to finish two shots behind medalist Dylan Wu, from Northwestern.
UCLA closed with a round of 6-under 349 to win by three over USC. The tournament used the best five-of-six scores.
Oliver wins first-time event
A final-round 71 lifted Howard Oliver to the inaugural Oahu Mid-Amateur Championship, which ended Monday at Kapolei. Oliver opened with an 80 Sunday at Hoakalei Country Club.
Paul Kimura (77), Bill Walbert (75) and Shigeru Matsui (74) tied for second at 152.
Winner of A Flight was Al Amii (78•159), with Bob Marshall (80•165) taking B Flight and Curt Kekuna (90•182) claiming C Flight.
The tournament was open to amateurs 25 years and older. It had 82 entries its first year.
